1. Begin standing in first position turnout with arms crossed behind your back. Holding your arms back will force you to control your abdominals which young dancers can have a habit of forgetting. The lack of ability to use your arms also makes these exercises a better workout for your quadriceps (thighs) and hamstrings (back of the thighs).
2. Bring your right leg straight out
in front from you ( 90 degrees/ devant) as you plié on your left leg.
3. Rond de jambe en l'air to à la
seconde and bring the right foot into passé as you relevé on your left leg.
4. Begin the entire rotation again
by bringing your right leg straight out in front from you from passé (90degrees/devant)
as you plie on your left leg.
What your doing is completing the actions
of the legs in a fouetté turn without the action of the entire body. Isolating
the leg movement forces you to control your core and focus on all the little intricacies
that make a fouetté turn amazing.
This exercise can be used for à la
seconde turns as well. In step 3 you would bring with the leg straight to à la
seconde (no passé). Step 4 you would bring your leg from side to front instead
of coming through passé.
Modifications
for port de bras: Keep your hands on your waist or use your arms in the correct
pathway for fouetté turn port de bras.
Modifications
for beginner dancers: Use a ballet barre for balance.
